AAA Editor Notes
Oldest House, 14 St. Francis St. at the s. end of the seawall, also known as the González-Alvarez House, is said to be Florida's oldest documented Spanish Colonial dwelling. Built on a site occupied since the early 1600s, the present structure, with coquina walls and hand-hewn cedar beams, dates from the early 1700s.
A number of alterations brought the house into its current shape and size, reflecting both Spanish and British architectural styles. The house is furnished to represent its different periods. An ornamental garden typifies plants grown by the Spanish, British and American occupants. The complex includes the Page L. Edwards Gallery, highlighting the city's history through changing exhibits, and Manucy Museum, tracing 450 years of the state's history.
