Read House and Gardens, 42 The Strand, was built in 1801-03 by the son of George Read, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. A fine example of Federal architecture, the 22-room mansion is furnished in period and features carved woodwork, relief plasterwork and gilded fanlights. Tours highlight the lifestyles of three resident families. A 1.5-acre formal Victorian garden graces the grounds.
