East Rock Park is 1.3 mi. n. on Church St./Whitney Ave., then .3 mi. e. on Willow St. and .2 mi. n. on Orange St. to 41 Cold Spring St. The 425-acre park includes 8 miles of hiking trails, athletic fields, two playgrounds, the Pardee Rose Gardens, the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument and Indian Head Peak. This is a notable spring bird-watching area visited by many species of migrating songbirds, as well as neo-tropical warblers in April and May. The rock for which the park is named is 365 feet high and 1.5 miles long. Accessible via Davis Road, the summit offers a panorama of Long Island Sound and the city of New Haven.
Canoeing and fishing are permitted on Mill River. Nature walks and animal programs at the Trowbridge Environmental Center allow visitors to learn about migrating and resident birds as well as how the area's leafless trees are identified.
