The Matchless Mine and “Baby Doe's” Cabin
AAA Editor Notes
The Matchless Mine and “Baby Doe's” Cabin is 1.25 mi. e. on E. 7th St. Sen. H.A.W. Tabor earned his wealth from the Matchless Mine and other claims during Leadville's silver boom of the 1880s. The depletion of high-grade silver ore and extravagant spending combined with the repeal of the Sherman Purchase Act of 1893 dealt the final blow to his fortune. Legend says that on his deathbed in 1899, Tabor instructed his second wife, Baby Doe, to “hang onto the Matchless.” She did, living in their cabin in poverty until her death in 1935. The museum has exhibits of Baby Doe memorabilia and displays about 19th-century mining.
