Independence Monument

Independence Monument (Monumento a la Independencia) stands at the center of the traffic circle (glorieta) at Paseo de la Reforma and Calle Río Tiber (M: Insurgentes, line 1). This 150-foot-tall column, topped by a winged statue of Victory, dates from the early 20th century. The central figure at the base is Father Miguel Hidalgo; he is flanked by statues of other leaders in the War of Independence, including José María Morelos and Nicolás Bravo. The female statues represent Law, Justice, War and Peace.

This is one of several landmarks at major intersections along Reforma; locals as well as tourists use them as geographical reference points.
