Church of San Fernando
AAA Editor Notes
Church of San Fernando (Iglesia de San Fernando) is n.w. of Alameda Park at Vicente Guerrero #39, facing tree-lined Plaza de San Fernando (M: Hidalgo, lines 2 and 3). A former monastery built by the friars of San Fernando and completed in 1755, it has a baroque facade that survived the monastery's dismantlement after the monks were expelled in 1860. The main altar, replete with extravagant gold ornamentation, is definitely worth seeing.
In the adjacent cemetery (Panteón de San Fernando) is the impressive 16-columned mausoleum, designed after the Parthenon in Athens, that contains the tomb of Benito Juárez, The former president was the final person buried here. With gravestones ranging from simple to ostentatious denoting a rather impressive roster of 19th-century Mexican presidents and political leaders, this small, compact cemetery is an interesting place to wander around.
