Sumidero Canyon

Sumidero Canyon (Cañon del Sumidero), about 23 km (14 mi.) n. of the city, is reached by a paved mountain road. It features five different lookout points that provide spectacular views of the canyon's sheer walls as they plunge to the Río Grijalva below. Boat tours can be arranged in the town of Chiapa de Corzo, east of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, to observe not only the canyon's gaping cliffs but the river's murky green waters and the surrounding forest's alligators, exotic birds and colorful butterflies.
