Na-Bolom Museum (Casa Na-Bolom) is about 10 blks. n.e. of the main plaza at Av. Vicente Guerrero #33. It celebrates the work of Danish explorer and ethnologist Frans Blom. The colonial-style building, dating from 1891 and now a museum and cultural center, was purchased by Blom in 1950.
Blom conducted extensive research at the Mayan ruins around Palenque and oversaw some of the first excavations at Uxmal, on the Yucatán Peninsula. His wife Gertrude, a journalist and photographer, devoted herself to preserving the rain forest homeland of the reclusive Lacandón Indians. Na-Bolom continues to operate as a private, nonprofit institute dedicated to the preservation of the environment and native cultures.
Guided 90-minute tours of the home take in a collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts put together by Blom; the library, with thousands of volumes about the Maya and Chiapas; a walk through the extensive gardens; and a showing of the film “La Reina de la Selva,” about the Lacandón forest and its inhabitants.
