AAA Editor Notes
Amber Museum (Museo del Ambar) is 3 blks. w. of the main plaza on Av. Diego Mazariegos. Housed in a restored section of the former Ex-Convento de la Merced, this is perhaps the only museum in Mexico devoted to amber, a brownish-yellow, translucent fossil resin that is mined in the nearby Simojovel Valley. On view are sculpted amber pieces carved by local artisans, as well as ancient chunks with fossilized insects inside. Exhibit information is in Spanish and English.
