Mission San Juan Capistrano, 3 blks. w. of the SR 74/I-5 jct. at 26801 Ortega Hwy., was founded Nov. 1, 1776, by Father Junípero Serra. The site includes artifact galleries, lavish gardens, fountains, the Great Stone Church ruins and the newly conserved Serra Chapel, the only standing church where St. Serra is known to have said mass. The grounds are home to swallows that migrate from Goya, Argentina, as well as hummingbirds and Monarch butterflies.
A digital audio tour of the mission is available in five languages (in two languages for children). Hands-on activities, learning programs and the Mission Clubhouse appeal to children. Cultural festivals and summer concerts also are offered.
