California State Railroad Museum is at 125 I St. at jct. 2nd St., part of Old Sacramento. The impressive three-level building houses 21 vintage locomotives and railcars along with temporary interactive exhibits, toy trains and a 20-minute film presentation documenting the history of American railroading.

Sacramento Southern Railroad steam and diesel trains (which one you get depends on the weekend) transport visitors along the Sacramento River levees on a 6-mile (45-minute round-trip) sightseeing journey weekends from April through September. Trains depart from the Central Pacific Freight Depot in Old Sacramento, on Front Street between J and K streets.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
