Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is 6 mi. n. of Orick on US 101. A coastal redwood park consisting of 14,000 acres, it protects one of the last wild herds of native Roosevelt elks. Davison Road, off US 101, is a narrow, unpaved route between the base of Gold Bluffs and Gold Bluffs Beach; elk are frequently seen along the road, which leads to picturesque Fern Canyon.
The beach was the site of gold-mining operations in the 1850s. Guided nature hikes and campfire programs are conducted June 1-Labor Day.
Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
