AAA Editor Notes
Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, 7 mi. s. of Crescent City on US 101, contains 15 memorial redwood groves within its 31,400 acres. The trees extend down steep slopes almost to the ocean shore at Damnation Creek. In this damp and shady environment the resident wildlife is primarily smaller animals like red squirrels, brown bats, newts, frogs and Western garter snakes. Salamanders and slugs thrive in the most conditions and rich, deep soil.

The Damnation Creek Trail, accessible from a turnout off US 101 at mile marker 16, offers a truly memorable wilderness hiking experience. The trail descends 1,000 feet via switchbacks through majestic, primeval redwood forest, ending at a rocky, starkly beautiful beach.

Note: The bridge on Damnation Creek Trail, located 1.75 miles in from the trail parking lot, is closed until further notice. Visitors can still hike the trail as far as the bridge, but there is no access to the beach. Phone ahead for updated reopening information.
