Lightship RELIEF

Lightship RELIEF is on the waterfront at Jack London Square, berthed next to the USS Potomac. Lightships served as floating lighthouses where construction of a permanent structure was impractical. Lightship RELIEF, formerly Coast Guard Lightship (WLV 605), is one of a group of ships that relieved regularly stationed lightships when the latter returned to port for maintenance. All U.S. lightships are now retired.
