Fort Ross State Historic Park

Fort Ross State Historic Park, 12 mi. n. on SR 1, is the site of an otter hunting base and trading post established in 1812 by The Russian American Company. In addition to trading supplies with missions, members of the Alaskan Native Force stationed at the post hunted otters and other fur-bearing mammals and facilitated the transport of food supplies to more remote settlements in what is now the state of Alaska.

Restored or reconstructed buildings within the stockade include the chapel, officers' barracks, the Kuskov House, two blockhouses and the reconstructed Magazin. Also within the compound is the Rotchev House, a National Historic Landmark and the oldest original surviving structure between San Francisco and the Alaskan border.

The park visitor center has a museum and bookstore. Visitors also can watch a film about the history of the site. Cultural Heritage Day takes place the last Saturday in July. Russian Orthodox services are held Memorial Day, July 4 and the last Saturday in July. Check the website for information about other special events.

Dogs are permitting in parking areas only.

Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
