Forestiere Underground Gardens

Forestiere Underground Gardens is .3 mi. e. off SR 99 exit 140 (Shaw Ave.) at 5021 W. Shaw Ave. It took Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere 40 years to create this underground retreat by hand, beginning in the early 1900s. Subterranean rooms, passageways, gardens, patios and courtyards with fruit trees are connected by tunnels and lit by skylights. The arches and stonework resemble the catacombs in Rome, Italy. The underground complex also contains a home and a chapel.
