The Petrified Forest is at 4100 Petrified Forest Rd. The park is a California State Historical Landmark preserve that harbors giant petrified redwoods. On the grounds are two half-mile trails that can be explored independently or on a guided tour. The trails pass excavated petrified trees, an ash fall and the site of the volcano that petrified the trees.

A new trail that opened in May 2016 leads to a grove of live redwoods. A museum also is on site.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
