Algodones Dunes

Algodones Dunes is 19.5 mi. e. off SR 78. Formed of sand from an ancient lake, wind-sculpted crests and ripples extend more than 40 miles; some sand crests reach heights of more than 300 feet. Next to SR 78 in the middle of the sand dunes is Osborne Overlook. Popular activities include bird-watching, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, off-road vehicle recreation and RV camping. Algodones Dunes consists of two areas—North Algodones Dunes Wilderness area and the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area.
