Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea is at 9811 Seaport Pl. The main concentration of this waterfront aquarium and marine education center is the inland Salish Sea ecosystem. After experiencing the sensation of descending into the ocean in a simulated elevator, visitors reach the Gallery of the Drifters to view plankton, algae and jellyfish.
The Ocean's Heartbeat, a classroomlike environment, has microscopes and live Internet links to undersea sites. The Gallery of the Salish Sea is where you'll find large aquarium habitats that are home to local marine life as well as works by native artists that depict the peoples' relationship with the ocean; an octopus den can be seen overhead.
Touch pools provide an opportunity to get up-close to some of the sea creatures such as sea urchins and sea stars, and docents, called “oceaneers,” are available to answer questions. The diverse population of the center's 17 aquariums include wolf eels, rockfish, sea cucumbers and anemones.
Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
