Big Qualicum Hatchery

Big Qualicum Hatchery is 2.5 km (1.5 mi.) s. on Hwy. 4W, 14.5 km (9 mi.) w. on Hwy. 19, then 2.4 km (1.5 mi.) s.w. on Horne Lake Rd. to Fisheries Rd., following signs. Millions of chum, coho and chinook salmon are hatched here each year as part of the country's efforts to restore its salmon population. Visitors can see holding ponds, rearing channels, incubation units and a topographical model of the Big Qualicum project. Mid-September to mid-November is the best time to see returning salmon. Hiking trails are available.
