Othello-Quintette Tunnels
AAA Editor Notes
Othello-Quintette Tunnels are off Hwy. 3 exit 170 in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park; take 6th St. 1 blk. n. to Kawkawa Lake Rd., then 5 km (3 mi.) e. to Tunnels Rd. Five tunnels were built 1911-16 to complete a railroad through Coquihalla Canyon. The Coquihalla River zigzags through the canyon, presenting a challenge to engineer Andrew McCulloch, who used dynamite to blast through the canyon walls to create the narrow tunnels.
The railway ceased operations in 1959; wooden walkways now bridge the river's serpentine course between the tunnels and allow close-up views of the rushing waters.
Note: Wear shoes with good traction, as the gravel path through the tunnels may be wet, slippery and uneven. A flashlight is recommended.
Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
