AAA Editor Notes
Kofa National Wildlife Refuge Office is at 9300 E. 28th St. Serving as the visitor center and headquarters for the 664,327-acre wildlife refuge, the office features exhibits describing the refuge's natural environment and cultural history. There are no trails or hiking access from the office. You can pick up brochures and maps here or at each of the main refuge entrance kiosks. Staff members can help plan a visit to the refuge.
Encompassing the Kofa and Castle Dome mountains 40 miles north of Yuma, the refuge preserves the habitat of desert bighorn sheep. Remote Palm Canyon is 18 miles south of Quartzsite on US 95, then 7 miles east on a maintained gravel road. It is one of the few places in Arizona where native palms grow. They can be seen from a point 200 yards away via a half-mile hike up a moderately steep trail.
Note: The last 200 yards to the palms present a strenuous climb. Refuge roads are rough and are best navigated by four-wheel-drive and high-clearance vehicles. Entering abandoned mines is prohibited.
