Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., is a museum of native art and culture. Among the exhibits in its 12 galleries are contemporary, ethnological and historical materials of Southwestern Native Americans; Native American basketry, jewelry and pottery; Navajo rugs and Kachina dolls.
The exhibit Home: Native Peoples of the Southwest examines art, foods, culture and spirituality of more than 20 tribes from desert, uplands and the Colorado Plateau regions. Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories explores history children, starting the 1870’s, being taken from families and transported to far-away schools where all signs of “Indian-ness” were stripped away. Students were trained for servitude and many went for years without familial contact. The museum presents more than a half dozen rotating galleries featuring traditional and contemporary Native American Art.
