AAA Editor Notes
Johnston Canyon is 22 km (14 mi.) w. of the town of Banff on the Bow Valley Pkwy. (Hwy. 1A). A gentle uphill hike to one or both of the two waterfalls at this canyon follows a partially-paved pathway through a wooded area along Johnston Creek. Observation points along the way allow for scenic views of the rushing water in the canyon below. At points along the trail, the pathway becomes more of a catwalk that is literally attached to the canyon wall.
The Lower Falls are reached after a hike of about 1.2 kilometres (.75 mi.); the trail continues another 1.2 kilometres (.75 mi.) to the Upper Falls.
Note: This is a popular trail and the parking lot can become crowded (frequently filling up by 10 a.m.). A Roam shuttle provides transportation between the Banff High School Transit Hub (on Banff Avenue between Elk and Moose streets) and Johnston Canyon late June to mid-Sept. One-way fare (cash only) is $4; $2 (ages 13-18 and 65+).
