Portage Glacier Recreation Area

Portage Glacier Recreation Area is 5.5 mi. e. from Milepost 79 of the Seward-Anchorage Hwy. Large icebergs calve off the face of the glacier into 650-foot-deep Portage Lake. An observation platform and a wayside exhibit are at the entrance to Williwaw Campground. Wayside exhibits also are available at Explorer Glacier. Iceworm safaris—hikes centered on spotting the elusive worms living in the glacier ice—are offered.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
