San Felipe Fort (Fortaleza San Felipe) dominates the Puerto Plata waterfront. Construction of the fort began in 1564 and was completed in 1577. It was built to protect the country from English pirates and Carib Indians. The fort was used as a prison for political dissidents during the Trujillo regime.
