AAA Editor Notes
Fort Fincastle stands atop Bennet's Hill. Builders named this 1793 fort in honor of Lord Dunmore, Viscount of Fincastle. The stone structure resembles a paddlewheel steamer. The 65 steps of the Queen's Staircase leading up to the fort from Elizabeth Avenue were cut from solid rock. The summit of the 126-foot Water Tower is the highest point on the island. The tower has cannon facings and a viewing deck overlooking Nassau and New Providence. Tours of the fort are offered by local guides.
