Guánica Dry Forest Reserve (Bosque Estatal de Guánica)

Guánica Dry Forest Reserve (Bosque Estatal de Guánica) is off Hwy. 2 on rds. 116, 333 and 334 to the visitor center. One of the largest tropical dry coastal forests in the world, Guánica covers nearly 10,000 acres along the southern coast. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, known as El Bosque Seco, is home to more than 600 types of rare plants and animals, including 48 endangered species. A population of the supposedly extinct Puerto Rican whippoorwills was discovered here in 1961. One lignum vitae tree is said to be more than 1,000 years old. The ruins of a Spanish lighthouse, El Faro Guánica, are visible.

More than 36 miles of trails lead through the forest, but hiking is recommended only during cool morning hours.

Visitors should wear protective clothing and carry drinking water.
