Known as one of the oldest summer resorts in America, Wolfeboro attained this status in 1768 when Gov. John Wentworth of Massachusetts built the country's first summer home. A marker at the site, 5 miles east on SR 109, commemorates the estate. By the time the governor's manor house burned in 1820, it was no longer unique. Summer homes and resorts now line Lake Wentworth and the southeastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. Although it has an air of sedate venerability, modern Wolfeboro is a major lake port.

NATIONAL PARKCape Cod National Seashore Occupying 40 miles along Cape Cod's coastline, the 43,608-acre Cape Cod National Seashore offers dunes constantly reshaped by storm and wind, marshland, glacial cliffs and dense forests. Spared the scars of industrial buildup, the beaches, ponds and open fields remain protected in a natural state. The cape also is marked by weathered cottages, villages and lighthouses.
NATIONAL PARKDelaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Stretching for 40 miles along the Delaware River in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area encompasses nearly 70,000 acres. Popular with artists and wealthy vacationers during the late 1800s, the gap is a picturesque break in the Kittatinny Ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. The park is threaded by the Delaware River. Wooded Mount Tammany and Mount Minsi rise abruptly 1,200 feet above the river at the Water Gap.

New York's only national forest was officially designated as such in October 1985. The forest comprises just 16,212 acres and is one of the country's smallest national forests.

NATIONAL PARKFort Stanwix National Monument Off SR 26 at 100 N. James St. in Rome, Fort Stanwix was built during the French and Indian War. In 1776, at the outbreak of the Revolution, the fort was repaired and restored by American rebels. Attacked by a force of British, Tories and Native Americans in 1777, it withstood a 3-week siege. The fort contains exhibits. Costumed interpreters re-enact 18th-century life in a military outpost. Museum open daily 9-5, Apr.-Dec.; Wed.-Sun. 9-5, rest of year. Fortress open daily 9:15-4:45. NATIONAL PARKFort Ticonderoga National Historic Landmark Fort Ticonderoga is at 100 Fort Ti Rd., SR 74 East, 1 mile off SR 22; a half-mile-long driveway leads to the site entrance. Fort Ticonderoga played a pivotal role in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Originally built by the French in 1755 to control the narrow shipping point on Lake Champlain, it was captured by British forces in 1759.
