Wetaskiwin got its name from a Cree phrase meaning “the hills where peace was made.” It is believed that a peace agreement between the warring Cree and Blackfoot tribes was made in the area. A stop between the growing outposts of Calgary and Edmonton, Wetaskiwin flourished due to its proximity to the Canadian Pacific Railway; the city was incorporated in 1906. Today Wetaskiwin boasts progressive commercial, agricultural and industrial ties, while a restored downtown area highlights the community's historic roots.

NATIONAL PARKElk Island National Park About 35 kilometres (22 mi.) east of Edmonton, Elk Island National Park is reached by Hwy. 15 from the north and Hwy. 16 from the south. The lakes, ponds, forests and meadows of this 194-square-kilometre (75-sq.-mi.) park provide a haven for many species of plants and animals, including bison, deer, moose, coyotes, beavers and elk.
