Waynesburg was named for Revolutionary War hero Gen. “Mad” Anthony Wayne. The town is the seat of Greene County, named for another Revolutionary War hero, Gen. Nathanael Greene. A statue of Greene is atop the 1850 county courthouse, a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. The old log courthouse, 144 E. Greene Street, now houses the Cornerstone Genealogical Society; phone (724) 627-5653. Also in town is Waynesburg University, one of the first colleges in the United States to grant degrees to women.
