Kankakee, on the Kankakee River, served as a gateway for the first white settlers in the region, leaving behind a French heritage. Kankakee County Historical Society Museum, 801 S. Eighth Ave., documents local history, exhibiting a one-room schoolhouse and the childhood home of Gov. Len Small; phone (815) 932-5279. Two of Frank Lloyd Wright's first Prairie-style houses can be seen in the area, including the B. Harley Bradley House, 701 S.
