Beginning near the Klondike River, this portion of the Dempster Highway snakes its way north toward the Arctic Circle. The drive climbs high into the craggy Ogilvie Mountains and ends in an area of undulating hills carpeted with mosses and shrubs, a result of permafrost. Bring spare tires and extra tanks of gas.

The wide, gravel Dempster Highway (PR 5) comprises this byway that first traverses the Klondike River Valley and then parallels the Ogilvie River into the Ogilvie Mountains. Caribou, bears, moose and Dall sheep roam the mountainous heights. Pullouts along the way overlook snow-capped peaks and, further on, grassy tundra. In summer, wildflowers add vivid color.
