42.8 miles: 56 minutes
Winding through the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Logan Canyon Highway (US 89) takes you past rocky river shores in the spring or impressive snow-capped peaks in the winter. Beirdneau Peak, Mt. Elmer and Beaver Mountain stand guard to the west; near the Idaho border at the northern terminus, birch and willow trees create a shady introduction to the brilliant turquoise waters of Bear Lake, where water sports are popular.

For most of its journey between Logan and Garden City, this byway parallels the Logan River and Beaver Creek through Logan Canyon, passing through dense forests, lush meadows and rugged rock formations. Each season brings a different show, with an especially colorful costume in autumn. A literal and figurative high point of this journey comes as US 89 climbs to 7,818, near the Bear Lake Overlook; it’s worth stopping to take a peek.
