Road Trip

63.3 miles: 1 hours, 5 minutes
This is the land of Lyndon B. Johnson, bluebonnets and, of course, rugged hills. Sprawling Texas ranches mix with grazing Longhorn cattle and ranges lined with cottonwood and mesquite. The best time to hit this stretch of US 281 is in spring, when wildflowers carpet the landscape. Peek at the serpentine Colorado River near Marble Falls.

This drive along US 281 through ranchlands and rolling hills offers great sightseeing. You’ll find the 675-acre Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, site of the 36th president's birth and boyhood home, deep in the heart of Texas near Johnson City. Come springtime, the countryside explodes in shades of sapphire as Lady Bird Johnson’s favored bluebonnets bloom.
