262.9 miles: 6 hours, 12 minutes
Eastern Oklahoma offers plenty of Route 66-related landmarks, so plan on several stops along the way. You can’t miss the 66-foot-tall pop bottle towering above POPS, a convenience store/soda fountain in the OKC suburb of Arcadia. And Clanton’s Cafe, an old-school diner in Vinita, has been serving chicken-fried steak to hungry Mother Road travelers since the 1920s.

Today yesterday’s Route 66 is primarily a straight shot of interstate between the Sooner State’s two largest cities. At about the halfway point on the journey to Tulsa, however, is a must stop for all fans of Mother Road lore: The Route 66 Interpretive Center in Chandler offers an interactive spin on history, with sound and visuals recalling “the way it used to be.”

This stretch of the route has lots of Mother Road lore. At Claremore, take a detour off I-44 via Route 66 and SR 28 to Totem Pole Park and the Native American-themed pieces created by folk artist Ed Galloway. Then hit Waylan’s Ku-Ku Burger in Miami, a classic Route 66 pit stop.
