Yuba Donner Scenic Byway loops through Tahoe National Forest and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The landscape alternates between valleys and mountainous terrain and features dense forested areas. SR 49 follows the rocky North Yuba River to the crest of the Sierra range. SR 89 descends through pine woodlands to the valley north of Lake Tahoe.
This mostly two-lane loop through Tahoe National Forest and the Sierra Nevada Mountains winds through heavily forested areas; trees tower above the roads at some segments. Craggy cliffs can be seen along much of the way, and vegetation includes a variety of pines. Stop at a scenic overlook to appreciate the vast beauty of the area.
