Seasonal route: The road is subject to closure in winter. Two-lane SR 89 crosses the Sierra Nevada southeast of Lake Tahoe. At an elevation of 8,314 feet, Monitor Pass is both figuratively and literally the high point of this mountain driving journey, offering astounding views of towering peaks and the endless expanse of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Farther along is Grover Hot Springs State Park, another highlight.
