Gentle curves along US 26 take you through the Ponderosa pines of Malheur National Forest to the high desert grasslands of Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The east-to-west route crosses the southern portion of the Blue Mountain Range, with distant peaks visible at higher elevations such as Dixie Pass (elev. 5,277 ft.).
Expect plenty of natural beauty but few signs of civilization along Malheur National Forest Scenic Drive. In addition to its scenery and solitude, US 26 provides access to several campgrounds within Malheur and Wallowa-Whitman national forests. Stretch your legs at the Sumpter Valley Interpretive Trail, where you’ll find tracks once used by the Sumpter Valley Railway.
