SR 28, the South Pass Scenic Highway, is associated with a key historical footnote: Thanks to an easy grade, 19th-century pioneers were able to cross the Continental Divide at South Pass. Today’s travelers have the advantage of a road that makes it much easier to appreciate the spectacular views, particularly of stunning Red Canyon.

Reminders of the mining past are on display at South Pass City State Historic Site. SR 28 traverses South Pass, roughly following the old Oregon Trail route. The broad, level terrain, at an elevation of 7,400 feet, is dotted with sagebrush. Be sure to stop at Red Canyon Scenic Overlook; the view beneath an impossibly big Wyoming sky is one you won’t soon forget.
