Begin your trek along the eastern portion of Ohio’s Lake Erie Coastal Trail at the Pennsylvania/Ohio border. Most of this drive parallels the Lake Erie shore, as the name implies, zigzagging along the way and providing peeks at small-town life, Ohio style.

Pennsylvania state line to Geneva-On-The-Lake
Start in Conneaut, a fitting place to begin as it was home to a trail used by Native Americans and westward-bound settlers. The area is known for its wineries and covered bridges, along with blazing sunsets over vast Lake Erie. In Ashtabula, scout for sea glass at Walnut Beach, then drive into the village, where you’ll find darling brick-clad shops and bistros.

Geneva-On-The-Lake to Fairport Harbor
Hit The Strip in Geneva-on-the-Lake, where families have gathered since 1869; today the carousel, Ferris wheel, arcades and waterslides still have immense appeal for anyone who likes good old-fashioned fun. The route dips into the village of Geneva, then heads back to the lakeshore past beachside condos and golf courses, ending in Fairport Harbor.

Fairport Harbor to Bratenahl
Climb a spiral staircase 60 feet to the top of the 1871 sandstone Fairport Lighthouse on Lake Erie for an expansive view of the harbor. Lighthouse enthusiasts will want to take a look at the three-story West Breakwater Lighthouse at Grand River, although it’s not open for tours. Lake Erie is just a stone’s throw from the road on the remainder of this leg.
