The North Sterling Scenic Highway comprises a 39-mile stretch of SR 1 across the upper Kenai Peninsula. This brief stretch showcases some of Alaska’s best natural beauty—blue lakes, dense forestation and mountain peaks. The ubiquitous wildflower known as fireweed adds splashes of lavender to the roadway’s edges.

The North Sterling Scenic Highway drive starts out on a high note with Tern Lake mere feet from the road. You can even pull over and park to take in the beauty of the glistening lake with mountain peaks just beyond the water’s edge. Journey farther on to see rock outcroppings. Quartz Creek, Kenai Lake, Kenai River and Jean Lake are other highlights lying right off the highway.
