Navigating the sometimes narrow, meandering Kuhio Highway, attention is easily drawn from the road to breathtaking views of green mountains, lush valleys and turquoise waters. Skirting Kau‘ai’s northern shore, SR 560 passes beaches, caves, cliffs, rivers, streams and some quaint towns. Predominantly one-lane bridges have weight limits, and beware of falling rocks.

Past Hanalei Valley Overlook’s panoramic views of forested mountains and a valley of plentiful taro fields, a quick drop in elevation leads to the first of SR 560’s several narrow bridges across rivers and streams. The byway winds past tropical vegetation and secluded bays and coves used to make the movie "South Pacific" before ending at Hā‘ena State Park’s idyllic beaches, beneath "Bali Hai" mountain.
