Your attention is drawn up and around the scenery on Glenn Highway (SR 1). One of the most impressive sights is the Matanuska Glacier, which you may glimpse at times. Below the summits, the forest displays a wealth of colors in the fall and a ribbon of green in the summer. With beautiful waters and steep mountain passes as well, the byway showcases natural Alaska.

On Glenn Highway (SR 1), you’ll see Palmer’s farmland give way to steep Alaskan terrain—the rugged Chugach Mountains to the south and the rocky Talkeena Mountains to the north. East of Chickaloon lies the Matanuska Glacier, the country’s largest glacier accessible by car. The route then descends from 3,322-foot Eureka Pass to the level marshlands west of Glennallen.
