Below the Kohala Mountains, Akoni Pule Highway (SR 270) hugs Hawai‘i Island’s scenic North Kohala coastline. The route begins in a lush, tropical area that’s home to two small, stop-worthy towns: Kapa‘au and Hāwī. After you enter a rain shadow and pass Lapakahi State Historical Park and the gated Kohala Ranch community, the landscape takes on a dry, rocky appearance.
