Overall Observations
The classic Wrangler, one of Jeep's most popular models, has an iconic appearance that hearkens back to the Jeeps of World War II. In 2021, Jeep introduced the Wrangler 4xe (that's "4 by e"), a plug-in hybrid, which has an estimated 21 miles of all-electric range.
People love the Wrangler's rugged good looks—nothing says "off-road adventure" quite like a Jeep Wrangler. We tested the most capable off-road version, the Rubicon, with its heavy-duty axles, locking front and rear differentials, disconnecting front stabilizer bar, and 33-inch all-terrain tires.
All Wrangler 4xe's come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, 2 electric motors, a battery pack, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and 4-wheel drive. That's good for 375 hp, which means the 4xe has plenty of power on tap.
Many folks buy the Wrangler—especially the Rubicon—for its offroad cred, but Jeep makes a few concessions to convenience and comfort. For example, the 4xe comes standard with dual automatic climate control with rear vents, an intuitive infotainment system, and LED headlights with auto high beams.
Without question, the Wrangler 4xe's biggest downside is its noisy cabin—lots of wind, road, and engine noise get in. Additionally, legroom is tight in the back seat, and the steering has too much play in it.
