Overall Observations
Looking for a luxurious, sporty midsize crossover? Check out the Lexus RX 500h.
Wait . . . what? Lexus? Yeah, Lexus. The automaker's vehicles typically focus on luxury, comfort, and solid build quality, but when the RX was redesigned for 2023, Lexus added a performance version, the 500h.
Available only in F Sport Performance trim, the 500h retains the automaker's signature virtues and adds a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a hybrid system, good for 366 hp. Added performance enhancements include front sport seats, upgraded brakes, a sport-tuned adaptive suspension, rear-wheel steering. All-wheel drive and a full set of advanced safety features are also standard.
The 500h is attractively styled inside and out, with good fit and finish and quality materials. The drivetrain delivers plenty of smooth power, but not at the expense of a quiet cabin or a supple ride. The steering feels responsive, and there's plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Some front-seat occupants might not like the heavily bolstered sport seats, however.
The RX 500h has a few shortcomings. The steering-wheel menu controls are distracting to use, and the only hard knobs are for the climate system and radio volume. Many features you’d expect to be standard on a $60,000 car—such as a moonroof and heated seats—cost extra. Finally, wide rear roof pillars restrict rear vision.
