Overall Observations
The third-generation GMC Canyon midsize pickup is the posher
(and pricier) corporate twin of the Chevy Colorado. Both were
completely redesigned for 2023.
The Canyon is powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged inline
4-cylinder engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission;
the V6 and diesel options are gone. Like the Colorado, the Canyon
is available only in a crew-cab, 5-feet-2-inch bed setup; the regular
cab and long-bed options are history. Four-wheel drive is optional
on the base trim and standard on the rest.
There's a lot to like about the sharp-looking new Canyon:
The engine delivers quick acceleration and plenty of power.
The suspension damping provides a good-quality ride both
on-road and off, and the brakes have plenty of stopping power.
The stylish interior features upscale materials, excellent fit
and finish, a standard 11.3-inch touch screen, and an intuitive
infotainment system.
Negatives are few but, in one instance, hard to excuse. The
engine is noisy, with noticeable turbo lag and throttle surge; the
headlights are controlled by the touch screen rather than a knob;
back-seat headroom and legroom are limited; and back-seat entry
and exit are awkward due to the lack of side steps.
But the biggest negative is that forward-collision warning,
automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and
lane-keeping assistance are the only standard advanced safety
features. Four others are extra-cost options.
