2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i

The X7 is BMW's flagship 3-row SUV. Brand-new in 2019, it got a significant midcycle refresh for 2023. Updates included an added 48-volt mild-hybrid system, adaptive air suspension with anti-roll functions, a curved wide-screen instrument and infotainment display, and updated front and rear styling. Our X7 test vehicle had a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine that delivered plenty of strong, smooth power. The X7's overall ride quality is commendable, and handling is agile, especially given that it weighs nearly 5,500 pounds. Fit and finish both inside and out are excellent, as are legroom and headroom for the first and second rows. The X7 offers many desirable features, but a surprising number—for a vehicle priced at nearly 100 grand—cost extra. For example, heated and ventilated seats are part of a Climate Comfort package ($1,600). The same is true for advanced safety features. Many are standard, but you’ll have to opt for the Driver Assistance Professional package ($1,700) to get adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. Functional negatives for the X7 are few. Fuel economy, at 21 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined, is disappointing. The second row of seats is power-adjustable, but its operation is nonintuitive. Finally, rear and side visibility are restricted because the second-row seats and headrests intrude.
