Chad of Skyler Towing & Recovery in Orangeburg, SC was sitting in his tow truck finishing up paperwork on a AAA member call when a passing van struck the back of his tow truck. Chad exited his truck and saw the driver of the van was badly injured and needed medical attention. He ran to the vehicle and pulled the driver out so he could begin CPR, which he had been trained on since he worked for the police force part time.
Chad, a AAA Real Hero of the Road, called 911 for help but because of the location of the crash, it took responders close to 45 minutes to arrive. Chad continued CPR and when the driver regained consciousness began comforting him and let him know help was on the way. At the time, his instinct was so strong to help the other driver that he didn’t even notice that he was hurt as well. Chad had sustained internal injuries and ended up needing to be hospitalized as well. Both Chad and the driver of the van have thankfully recovered but without Chad’s selfless act, the driver may not have survived his injuries.
Chad was a Real Hero of the Road to that injured driver that fateful day. When you’re driving along the highway and see Chad or someone else working at the roadside, think of this story and what his selflessness meant to that driver. And when you do, please slow down and move over so they can do their job safely. We need service providers like Chad and so do our members; but most of all, so do their families. Help us keep them safe.
